Storm damage

Published December 15, 2006 / by Steve Berentson

Thursday night’s wind storm slammed communities throughout the Northwest, and Anacortes was no exception. School was cancelled, primarily due to situations like this on Havecost Road. Trees are down all over Fidalgo Island, especially on the west side. I got about a mile from this snapped tree and was turned back at Marine Drive. I tried getting to The Pointe from the Skyline side and was turned back there, too. News of two trees on a friend’s house drew me out, but I’ll have to wait until roads are cleared to get in with the camera. See more wind damage scenes in the Activities section under “Winter wind.”

About Steve Berentson
A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
