Biz Point rescue

Two teen-aged boaters were rescued Tuesday night off Biz Point after their “Sunfish” sailboat capsized. First on the scene at about 8 p.m. were a couple of neighbors in a rowboat and small skiff. They were soon joined by the crew of the Crowley tug “Response,” which had been diverted by the U.S. Coast Guard. The accident victims climbed from the hull of the capsized boat to the deck of the tug (see person in orange climbing tug ladder to left of capsized boat). A few minutes later a Coast Guard vessel and helicopter arrived from Port Angeles. According to Coast Guard spokesman David Marin, an HH-65c dolphin helicopter crew transported the pair to Coast Guard Station Bellingham, and then to meet their father. Both teens were reported to be in good condition, with no need for medical attention. I watched the drama from a friend’s deck after we noticed a man rowing from shore in a dinghy. The capsized boat was towed to a cove where other boats are moored.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
