Mandan clan

I took the opportunity this week to photograph the “Mandan clan.” With the exception of a short stint in Coupeville during World War II, my mom and her siblings called Mandan, North Dakota home. Mom and Dad met after Grandpa Peters joined the Navy and was stationed at NAS Whidbey. Mom stayed behind in a Civil Service job when her family returned to Mandan. She and Dad met shortly after the war. Pictured here (r. to left) are Jim Peters, Sally Milhollan, Verna Berentson, Gordy Peters, Duke Peters and his wife, Delores. The “boys” still live in North Dakota; Sally in Denver. It’s always entertaining to be part of this family reunion.

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
