Remembrance

Just last night a few friends of mine were talking, noting generational differences between our parents and ourselves. Obviously this is not true of all who served in my mother and father’s era, but many who fought in World War II came home, packed away their uniforms and quietly returned to their roles as sons, husbands, fathers, friends and workers. Today as we honor the memory of those killed or wounded in the Dec. 7, 1941 surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, I want to express my gratitude to all Americans, past and present, who have suffered the personal ravages of war. Freedom is a precious gift.

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
