Volunteer flowers

Many believe it is the city that is responsible for the colorful flowers on Commercial Avenue, but the truth is the city is just one of many players in this effort. It is a group of volunteers operating under the name Anacortes Beautification Committee that approached the Chamber of Commerce several years ago with an offer to raise money for sidewalk planters. The annual campaign continues, funded in part by a garden sale conducted each spring at the Majestic Inn and Spa. Meanwhile, the Chamber of Commerce provides hanging baskets. Among volunteers on this year’s hanging team were Dillon Bundy and Tyler Carpenter, members of the high school wrestling team. The two “wrestled” heavy baskets into position high on steetside lampposts. City crews will water the baskets and planters when they have been positioned for the season. Thanks all!

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
