Candies tour

Dakota Creek Industries and client Otto Candies offered a rare opportunity Saturday, inviting the public to an open house aboard the new vessel M/V Grant Candies, pictured here at the Port of Anacortes. The 2,600-ton, 292-foot merchant vessel is owned by a Louisiana-based marine transportation and towing company. Representatives from Otto Candies, including Otto Candies Jr., attended the event. The vessel will serve as an off-shore supply ship for crews inspecting and maintaining underwater oil structures. The Grant Candies, which can house up to 150 people, features a private cinema, heliport and a fully-equipped hospital. According to the Anacortes American, the $60 million-plus vessel is the first of three Dakota Creek is scheduled to build. Pieces of the second, M/V Ross Candies, are being cut and assembled in the company

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
