Anacortes business people had the opportunity Tuesday to tour nearby NAS Whidbey. Lunch took place at the Officer’s Club, which includes behind the bar display “graphics” such as this model of an EA6B electronic warfare aircraft. Chamber members learned that NAS Whidbey boasts a population of 7,600 military personnel; 1,200 Department of Defense employees; 1,200 civilian contractors. Family members number about 10,600. Economic impact of the air base: $335 million in annual payroll to military; $90 million to civilians. The base spends about $120 million a year in public works projects: construction, maintenance, utilities, grounds, vehicles. The base also contracts with the City of Anacortes for its water supply.
