Tulips are coming

Selection Wednesday evening of young “tulip ambassadors” hints of the 2010 Skagit Valley Tulip Festival, a wildly popular event that “spills” many tourists into Anacortes. Selected as 2010 Key Bank Tulip Festival Ambassadors were 11-year-old Blake Gurney of Burlington and 10-year-old Anna-Marie Alvarado of Mount Vernon. Among judges who made final ambassador selections among 52 contestants was Jody Barnett of Shell Puget Sound Refinery. The bouquets the kids are holding were put together by Anacortes Chamber member Stacie Sutliff of Blush Custom Floral. The Skagit Valley Tulip Festival runs from April 1 to April 30, with events including the Quilt Walk in Anacortes (all month) and the Anacortes Quilt Show (April 2 & 3). This year the Skagit Valley will host the World Tulip Summit, April 13-15. See www.tulipfestival.org for details.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
