Boat parade

Anacortes Port officials opened the 2010 boating season with a bang – literally – in a 90-minute program at Cap Sante Boat Haven. Colonel Lee Dawes of the Fidalgo Island Artillery Company opened the season with a blast from his cannon. Following the blast was a program with speakers including Town Crier Richard Riddell, Port Commission President Keith Rubin and Port Executive Director Bob Hyde. Father Vu Tran conducted a “blessing of the fleet” service. Commemorative “burgees (small penants)” were presented to a handful of the Port’s 88 marina tenants with 20 or more years at CSBH. Among other speakers were City Council members Erica Pickett; Chamber representative Mark Bunzell, Marine Trades representative John Ripley, Anacortes Yacht Club Commodore Ed Kennedy and Anacortes Small Boat Center President John Pope.
Donneta Spath of the new Marine Skills Center spoke briefly and then conducted exterior tours of the facility, which will open to students in September. See more photos in “Activities” section.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
