Inching closer

Operating a tugboat can be a game of inches. Well, Dakota Creek Industries crews are inching closer to completion of this tugboat on the Anacortes waterfront. The Crowley Maritime Type 750 “Legacy Class” Articulated Tug and Barge combination is the largest ever designed. The three 330,000 bbs barges are being constructed at VT Halter, Pascagoula, Mississippi and the three tugs at Dakota Creek. The tugs, designed by Naviform in Vancouver, BC, have unique propulsion pod housing. The two Wartsila C32 Main Engines and the controllable pitch propellers produce a total of 16,000 HP. Each engine/propeller is arranged in separate engine rooms and is capable of runing on heavy fuel oil. The M/V Legacy is scheduled for completion in November 2010; M/V Liberty, June 2011; M/V Legend, March 2012.

About Steve Berentson
A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
