Generation gap

The appeal differs, but both tall ship Lady Washington and power boat Mystic Sea (right) generate revenue by inviting tourists for Puget Sound adventures. The Mystic Sea is a whale watching vessel based in Anacortes. The Lady Washington, whose homeport is Grays Harbor, moves about during spring and summer. For the past five days she worked out of Cap Sante Boat Haven in Anacortes, taking daily excursions into surrounding waters. The Lady headed for the San Juans yesterday (Wednesday), passing by the port dock to a farewell cannon volley from Lee Dawes. The Lady “returned fire,” with three or four volleys of her own.

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
