New asset

This scene is just a hint of things to come at Seafarers’ Memorial Park on the Anacortes waterfront. The park, owned and operated by the Port of Anacortes, re-opened Friday after two years of an environmental cleanup. Other “upgrades” include public amenities such as benches, picnic tables, pier and dock. Colored algae growth on the rock “attenuators” is a sign of new life following the cleanup. This $34 million project was completed in three phases, with cleanup efforts accomplished in partnership with the state Department of Ecology and the Kimberly Clark Corporation, former owner of the Scott Paper mill. This was the third of five Port environmental cleanup projects under our Focus Fidalgo framework, which coordinated cleanup, habitat restoration, and redevelopment efforts in accordance with Governor Christine Gregoire

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
