Window shopping – literally

I shot this photograph recently at Watermark Books in downtown Anacortes, where 15-year shop employee Dave Taylor was assisting a customer who spotted a “book of interest” in the front window display. I was researching an e-newsletter article for the Anacortes Chamber of Commerce. Evidence of this community’s love for books is the fact that there are two new book stores (Watermark and Read Me a Story) and two used book stores (Earthbound and Pelican Bay) within a few blocks of each other. There are small scale book sales in numerous other places, ranging from grocery stores to kitchen shops, from marine supply shops  to hardware stores.

About Steve Berentson
A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
