Hawks play for state title

Many people in Anacortes woke up to the news today that the AHS boys basketball team had defeated defending state champ Lynden to move into tonight’s game for the state championship! Those who follow the game cheered last night as Anacortes played an excellent game against league opponent Lynden from start to finish. When the final buzzer sounded, Anacortes stood victorious, 52-44. Tonight’s 9 p.m. game in Yakima pits Anacortes against Pullman. This photo was taken by an AHS yearbook photographer earlier in the season in a game Anacortes lost to Lynden. Friday night’s victory was all about team play: stifling defense, aggressive offense … and a stellar performance by Jeremiah Steilow, a California transfer who had limited play time all season due to a pre-season injury. Go Hawks!

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
