Navy air crew killed

Officials at NAS Whidbey in Oak Harbor have confirmed that a Navy jet crashed in eastern Washington Monday morning, killing all three crew members. Navy officials said the EA6B “Prowler” was from Electronic Attack Squadron VAQ-129, on a routine training mission. The EA-6B can seat up to four crew members. This photograph shows one of the two jets (A6 and EA-6B) making up a static display at the Highway 20 intersection leading to NAS Whidbey Ault Field. According to a U.S. Navy Department press statement, “The Navy is investigating the cause of the crash and will provide more information as it becomes available.” Names of the deceased will not be released until 24 hours after notification of next of kin.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
