Major growth at Navy base

This is news that will impact Anacortes in numerous ways, from increased sales for local businesses to a likely increase in the number of schoolchildren from Navy families. The Whidbey News-Times reports that Naval Air Station Whidbey is expected to receive six or seven P8-A squadrons starting in 2015. The base is slated to receive federal funding for three construction projects: a total of $32 million is allotted for EA-18G facility improvements ($85 million for P8-A facilities and $10 million to replace a fuel pier breakwater). In addition, the Navy is considering NAS Whidbey for the addition of two EA-16G expeditionary squadrons in 2016.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
