Ship honors astronaut Ride

Visible on the stern of a research vessel under construction at Dakota Creek Industries (DCI) is lettering for the ship’s name: Sally Ride. Dr. Sally Ride, a Stanford graduate, boasted a science background that helped her beat out 1,000 other applicants for a spot in NASA’s astronaut program. Ride joined the Challenger shuttle mission on June 18, 1983, and became the first American woman in space (two female Soviet cosmonauts preceded her). Ride died from pancreatic cancer on July 23, 2012 at the age of 61. A “twin” vessel under construction at DCI is named after astronaut Neil Armstrong. (Ride photo from NASA)

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
