Jail construction celebrated

It was a star-studded cast gathered for a November 13 groundbreaking ceremony at the site of the new Skagit County Jail. The City of Anacortes was well represented at a ceremony which drew dozens of partners including not only active officials but also a former sheriff, commissioner and mayor. Pictured here (l. to r.) are Commissioner Ken Dahlstedt, Skagit County Corrections Chief Charlie Wend, Mount Vernon Police Chief Jerry Dodd, Sedro-Woolley Police Chief Lin Tucker, Anacortes Police Chief Bonnie Bowers, Sheriff’s Department Lt. Deanna Randall-Secrest, Mount Vernon Mayor Jill Boudreau, Commissioner Lisa Janicki, Anacortes Mayor Laurie Gere, former Anacortes Mayor Dean Maxwell, Sheriff Will Reichardt, Sedro-Woolley Mayor-elect Keith Wagoner, Commissioner Ron Wesen and retired Commissioner Sharon Dillon; back, Project Manager Marc Estvold.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
