We remember Willie McCool

Today marks the anniversary of the tragic loss of U.S. space shuttle Columbia’s seven-person crew in a re-entry pattern over Texas. On February 1, 2003, the Columbia broke apart while re-entering the atmosphere, killing all crew members including an Anacortes resident, Cmdr. William “Willie” McCool. The disaster occurred minutes before Columbia was scheduled to land at Florida’s Kennedy Space Center. NASA photo of McCool. Backdrop photo is Artist Point. McCool was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hiking in the Northwest. http://www.seattlepi.com/news/article/McCool-s-excitement-was-infectious-1106630.php?cmpid=email-tablet

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
