Remembering ‘Scoop’

That this Anacortes photojournalist is fondly remembered is no question, as evidenced by a Facebook post that drew more than five dozen written responses. This is a photo I took of Paul “Scoop” Mahoney, who worked for the Anacortes American. Before he died in 1996 he had served this community not only as a journalist, but as a photographer “on the side,” shooting people and events ranging from weddings and high school graduations to pee wee sports teams. Facebook comments included: “a nice man;” “a great one in the Anacortes community;” “well loved;” “my first editor;” “a great friend.” He also transitioned from one field of public service to another, serving as Skagit County Assessor for three terms from 1982-94. He is missed.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
