A new era begins soon

The look is one of substantial completion, but about four weeks remain on construction of Rice Field and Seahawk Stadium in the area known as Smiley’s Bottom. Plans include a new stadium to seat 1,500 and synthetic turf football field, as well as installations for track and field events such as pole vault and discuss; new ticketing, concessions and restroom facilities. A new Veterans’ memorial plaza will honor Americans who served in wars from 1775 to present day–including AHS alumni, two of whom have been awarded the Medal of Honor. Hopes are to wrap the stadium project by mid-September, with a dedication scheduled on October 5. Contractor is FORMA. This photo was taken on August 13, 2016. Steve Berentson

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
