100 years young

Friends and family gathered today (December 2) to celebrate Ethel Haakenson’s 100th birthday. Ethel was born in Henning, Minnesota. She and her late husband Idar moved to Anacortes from North Dakota in 1944. Pictured here with Ethel (pretty in pink) are church friends Goodie Lorentzen and Ida Ford. Goodie (95 years old) said Ethel was one of the first people she met when she and husband Norman moved to Anacortes in 1955. Ethel’s party, which featured two cakes, hymns and the Lord’s prayer, took place at Rosario Assisted Living, hosted by son and daughter in law Ernie and Linda. Also on hand, all the way from their home in the Midwest, were relatives Kit Lauen and Melinda Vigil. Anacortes Lutheran Church Pastor Debra Benson was on hand to lead song and prayer.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
