Christmas past, donations present

This photograph of young musicians was taken in 2010 at the Port of Anacortes Transit Shed Event Center, which remains a “home” to several annual holiday events including the Anacortes Schools Foundation holiday dinner fundraiser. The Anacortes Schools Foundation’s recent “Celebrate the Season” events exceeded expectations, raising $43,000 for an expansion of the Foundation’s middle school STEM enrichment programs through a “Raise the Paddle” event led by auctioneer Pat Grant. The big surprise of the event was an announcement by Tesoro refinery External Affairs Manager Matt Gill of a $20,000 grant from Tesoro Foundation.

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
