Final flight for naval aviator

I had the opportunity last week to take photos as U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Stephen Sweeney closed out a 15-year military career with a “final flight” and subsequent “ceremony” at NAS Whidbey. After his flight Sweeney descended from the cockpit to be greeted by fellow members of the “Rooks” of Electronic Attack Squadron 137. They opened up with five-gallon buckets of water, followed by the traditional champagne shower. I’ve attended many Navy events such as changes of command and “homecomings” after carrier deployments, but this was a first for me. A real privilege. I am grateful to Stephen for his service to country … and to all of those who continue to put themselves in harm’s way for this nation and its allies.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
