The honorable Robert Gates

I had the privilege last week of photographing former U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates. Gates, now a Skagit Valley resident, took a seat among donors to the Skagit Valley YMCA building fund. The Y celebrated a groundbreaking event in Mount Vernon. In addition to service as Secretary of Defense, Gates’ resume includes Director of the CIA, member of the National Security Council, President of the Boy Scouts of America, Chancellor of the College of William & Mary and President of Texas A&M. In 2014 he published a book titled: “Duty: Memoirs of a Secretary at War.” Gates said his favorite part of serving as Secretary of Defense was visiting U.S. troops. His storied career began as a U.S. Air Force officer.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
