Work to “light up” the arch welcoming guests to Historic Downtown Anacortes was accomplished by an Island Electric team including John Tibbles. New lighting on the Commercial Avenue arch include LEDs and a spot on the central element. Check it out some evening, or early morning.
Gaze under the “Historic Downtown Anacortes” arch these days and you will see the image of city namesake Anna Curtis on the side of the historic Wilson Hotel. Look soon for a new Bill Mitchell mural on the Commercial Avenue face of the Chamber of Commerce Visitor Information Center.
These are the days of soupy morning drives. It was clear on the south end of town this morning, but the fog grew thicker as we headed north into town. This photo was taken on the corner of 11th Street and Commercial, home of the Historic Downtown arch.
Beautiful weather and the burning desire to score on a bargain drove thousands to Commercial Avenue in downtown Anacortes Saturday for another great Shipwreck Day. See more photos in Activities section. Today’s feature, compliments of the Chamber of Commerce, is a free Car Show. See the classics shine in the summer sun.
July 4th marks the one-year anniversary since dedication of the arch spanning Commercial Avenue at 11th Street. Last year was the first year the “Town Photo” was taken under the arch, which has been welcoming guests to downtown Anacortes since that time. Check out the city’s beautiful hanging flower baskets, not only on the arch […]
Spring blossoms are right on schedule in downtown Anacortes. This photograph features the historic Downtown Anacortes arch with daffodils from the Safeway parking area in the foreground. Tulips can’t be far behind.
It’s interesting to hear among local political candidates that we need to build our retail base. Seems to me to be more of a “grassroots” issue than one of local government. We’ve got some great little businesses here, but many are not getting the customer volume they need to remain healthy. Maybe high gas prices […]
Town Crier Judy Jewell took a deep breath and proudly (loudly) read a proclamation dedicating the new Downtown Arch to the City of Anacortes. The arch, which was funded by private donations, is now public property. For more photos see “Dedicated to the people” in Activities section.
Wow. A protective wrapping on the two columns of the city’s new historic arch was removed Thursday, revealing a copper skin that is guaranteed to catch the eye of any north Commercial Avenue traveler. For a sense of what the copper will look like after a few months, see the copper roof on Horizon Bank, […]
Among those on a team of talented craftsmen working on the Historic Arch project downtown is Bryan Elliott, who is piecing together stone at the bases of two columns. Elliott, a 1981 graduate of Anacortes High School, is finished with the column on the east side of Commercial Avenue. He is now well on his […]
With little fanfare, artwork was mounted this morning on the south side of the new Historic Downtown Anacortes arch. Work continues almost daily on the privately funded project, which is scheduled for an “official” christening on Independence Day.
Crews were at work again bright and early Thursday morning, continuing work on wooden columns for the historic archway designed to welcome visitors to downtown Anacortes. I can hardly wait to read next week’s Letters to the Editor section of the Anacortes American to determine whether I can continue to refer to this structure as […]
