Snow-capped Cap

This young man and I were the only visitors to Cap Sante at 3 p.m. Thursday, but before we left two other vehicles had pulled in to an ice-capped parking lot. Views were excellent, but it was cold. Tomorrow is expected to be sunny and cold again. School buses, mail vehicles and delivery trucks will […]

Winter morning

A bald eagle stands guard over the northeast tip of Fidalgo Island Saturday morning as a pair of boats round the corner from the Guemes Channel into Fidalgo Bay.

Crisp and clear

What a gorgeous morning to view this seaside city from the top of Cap Sante. I took this photo at 9:45 from back a bit in the rocks. My first visit of the morning was the post office, which predictably drew a morning crowd on the first day back after Christmas.

Dad and son

I shared some time this morning with Steve Switzer and his 2-year-old son, Ethan on a sun-splashed but chilly Cap Sante. Ethan, who will be three in January, loves to climb rocks…with Dad close behind. Steve made Anacortes his home after being introduced to the area by the U.S. Navy (NAS Whidbey).

Extraordinary home

It’s one of the more creative homes in the community. The house, located near Cap Sante, looks to me like something off the pages of a fantasy story.

Marina dredging

A member of a dredging crew at work at Cap Sante Marina scrambles from skiff to barge Monday just before noon. The work at the port’s marina drew a crowd of two at the time of this photograph. Just a few hundred yards away, construction crews began framing on buildings near the entrance to South […]

Sunday sail

It was exciting Sunday morning to discover this boat coming into Anacortes under sail. More often than not, sailboats motor in and out of Cap Sante Marina. Makes one wish one was a boat owner…

Windy work

The word is wind today, November 3, as forecasters predict gusts of up to 60 miles per hour. Work on replacement docks at Cap Sante Marina continues. I don’t know whether the sailor in this photo was heading “into it,” or just moving his boat within the safe confines of the marina. I’m thinking the […]

Changes on the docks

After many months of planning, dock replacements are under way at the Port of Anacortes Cap Sante Marina in downtown Anacortes. A comprehensive marina improvement project will ultimately include pedestrian-friendly upland development as well. This view from Cap Sante includes Safeway and 12th Avenue heading to the west side of the city (center).

Learning the ropes

As Lady Washington crewmembers work high in the ship’s rigging, you can see cars parked at the popular Cap Sante viewpoint overlooking the city. “The Lady” is in town through the day, open for tours, but she leaves tonight. Because of work on the rigging, she will not depart under sail. Our loss. Still, it’s […]

Kayaking Anacortes

Sunny days and relaxed summer schedules draw many people to Fidalgo Island’s beaches. In this scene, a lone kayaker paddles from the beach toward the base of Cap Sante, one of this city’s most popular viewpoints.
