Trees down

When people get out this spring, they are going to notice some of the devastation caused by Winter 2007 wind storms, including these two trees at historic Causland Park in downtown Anacortes. A great deal of damage also occurred in city forestlands, and in popular state parks including Deception Pass.

Park patriotism

Crowds gathered at historic Causland Park Tuesday following an extraordinary Fourth of July parade on Commercial Avenue. Town Crier Judy Jewell opened the park event with a proclamation that included tribute to those in American armed forces. Grand marshals in the parade represented several branches of the military. Clouds parted to make way for sunshine […]

Canes at Causland

Christmas carolers young and old gathered Saturday night at Causland Park for an old-fashioned sing-along hosted by the Salvation Army Anacortes Corps. In addition to live music, Santa (Jim Bergeson) and an elf (Sonja Erlandson) arrived by firetruck to distribute small gifts to children … and candy canes to one and all. See more photos […]

Lions light it up

Volunteers from the Anacortes Lions Club have contributed more than 150 hours of work lighting up historic Causland Park for Christmas. This photograph doesn’t do justice to the drama of the lights as seen at night. Check it out at the park, just one block off Commercial Avenue on 8th Street.

Condos by Causland

Foundations are in and framing has begun on a couple of condo units across the street from Causland Memorial Park. This long-vacant lot between 8th and 9th streets will be home to dozens of people after construction is complete. Trees at Causland Park are visible north of this construction.

Patriotic crowd

It was truly a day of celebration at Causland Memorial Park, where hundreds gathered for a range of activities including acknowledgement of the community’s 125th anniversary. The city was founded on March 13, 1879 with the establishment of a post office. For more photos, see Activities section under Independence Day Music; Scenes from Causland Fourth; […]

Flag flies at Causland Memorial

I had Causland Memorial Park all to myself for a few minutes Wednesday afternoon. Amazing, considering the weather and the beauty of the downtown park. This photograph of the American flag was taken from the south wall entrance to the park.

Hearty holiday family

These young parents were among a couple of dozen hearty souls who gathered Friday night for a lighting ceremony at Causland Park. Apparently the event was cancelled due to weather, but word didn’t get out to everyone … including this photographer. Lion’s club member Tim Walters succeeded in getting a few lights lit on the […]

Season’s changes

Flower blossoms are becoming less abundant as summer turns to fall. Still, there are splashes of color such as this berry bush at the south entrance to historic Causland Memorial Park. The temperature is dropping, and leaves are turning color. Our much-needed Northwest rain can’t be far behind. It’s fall on Fidalgo Island.
