Top tree

Thanks in large part to a $15,000 bid for this tree, the Island Hospital Foundation grossed almost $48,000 at a Christmas tree auction held Saturday. This tree was donated by the emergency response department at Shell Puget Sound Refinery.

Downtown decorations

The countdown to Christmas has begun, as evidenced by the white lights and decorations already placed to “dress up” the city’s retail districts. Check out the hospital foundation’s Celebration of Trees on display at the Port of Anacortes warehouse, 1st and Commercial, this Thursday through Saturday. On Saturday the free horse and carriage rides are […]

Holiday treat

It was smiles all-round Saturday afternoon as one-time WSU roommates Melissa VanGorkom and Kirsten Tyhuis treated their little girls to a carriage ride in downtown Anacortes. It’s a year of firsts for Whitney (left) and Hallie, neither of whom has celebrated her first birthday. The free horse and carriage rides are available from now until […]

Adrift decor

Only a few days remain for seasonal window displays such as this one at Adrift restaurant. I love the sailboats in Adrift’s windows … and the good news is they will still be there long after the Christmas ornaments have been tucked away until next winter.

Guemes prepares

The ferry prepares to dock at Guemes Island on a cool, rainy Saturday morning as the clock ticks toward Christmas. Recent winds dropped many trees on the island, two of which were on the property of a friend. A crew of buddies descended on the island for a couple of hours, sawing rounds that will […]

Clock’s ticking

The clock’s ticking, and beautiful trees are still for sale at the Kiwanis Club lot in the parking area of Sebo’s hardware store on Commercial Avenue. Among volunteers at the tree lot are Don Fenkner and Walt Jensen. Proceeds from tree sales go to community “investments” such as college scholarships for local students.

For the cause

Among Saturday morning shoppers at the Kiwanis Christmas tree stand were Bentli Kravland (right) and Paula Wood, assisted by volunteer Tom Kier. Funds from this effort, based in the parking lot of Sebo’s hardware store, go to community efforts including college scholarships. Also working with Kier were Don Fenkner and Walt Jensen.

Muralist on parade

Historic mural artist Bill Mitchell participated in the 2006 Christmas Parade, rolling down Commercial in his familiar three-wheeled cart. In addition to the cutout creation of salmon and Disney’s Little Mermaid, a “blank” representing a stolen mural appeared in the parade with Bill, whose works appear on exterior walls of buildings throughout the community. Anyone […]

Seasonal lights

Like many downtown businesses, the Watermark book store “dresses in lights” during the holiday season. This photograph was taken from Commercial Avenue on the night of the community Christmas tree lighting and the 2006 Holiday Art Walk.

Band braves cold

Members of the Anacortes High School Band braved the elements Saturday to bring music to the 2006 Christmas parade. Hundreds of people lined Commercial Avenue for this annual event. The presence of the AHS Marching Band is greatly appreciated…

Christmas lights

After a week that found many hunkered down due to snow and ice, hundreds of Anacortesans gathered downtown Friday for the annual Christmas tree lighting sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. Following the tree lighting festivities, folks spilled onto Commercial Avenue. Many businesses including shops, galleries and restaurants were open for the annual Holiday Art […]

Christmas coming

My word! We watched the national news to learn about the snowstorms in the Northwest, then heard from the young adults about weather-related trials and tribulations. Here on Oahu, it’s weird to see Christmas decorations going up even as temperatures continue to average 85. Have been visiting a local Salvation Army Red Kettle here, look […]
