Currier at work

I was surprised at 7:30 Tuesday evening to find artist Al Currier with his easel and paints on Commercial Avenue. The local artist said historic Anacortes Marine Supply and Hardware has been on his “to paint” list for quite a while. I didn’t linger because he was working against the clock in terms of light […]

Old town shops

This is one of the views from the Majestic Inn and Spa, looking down on Commercial Avenue and 4th Stret. Among shops in the neighborhood are The Business, the Brown Lantern, Maison et Jardin and Rockfish Grill/Anacortes Brewery.

Father and son

Although it is tiny in comparison to its prime decades ago, there is still an active commercial fishing industry in Anacortes. Pictured here at Cap Sante Boat Haven are Kyle and Ken Crews.

Making a living

This might look like a photo from the past, but it actually a photo I shot just a few days ago at the “T” Dock at Cap Sante Boat Haven. The monochrome treatment, plus the familiar features of the commercial fishing boat, gives the “good ol’ days” impression.

Commercial space

Contractors are working this week at the New Wilson Hotel on Commercial Avenue, leveling floors in street-level space committed to business leases. To date, businesses include Impressions Salon and Wildflower Home and Garden. Artwork is planned on the blank wall to the left, under the auspices of the Anacortes Arts Commission.

Ready for tenants

Mayor Dean Maxwell toured the New Wilson Hotel project this week, including a visit to the commercial/retail spaces available for lease on the first floor level. Upstairs, the historic building features 25 one- and two-bedroom apartments. The subsidized living units will be managed by the Anacortes Housing Authority. Crews are painting now, with the building […]

Wind damage

Wind and rain dealt damaging blows to Anacortes this weekend, including this high-profile hit on the New Wilson renovation project downtown. Emergency crews worked all day on the twisted wreck of a wall of scaffolding and protective plastic wrap on the hotel’s north side. Commercial Avenue and two side streets were closed to traffic to […]

New bank sign

It was literally a sign of progress this week when neon signs went up on north, east and west sides of the historic Anacortes building that will soon be home to The Bank of the Pacific. The bank, located across the street from the New Wilson Hotel at 8th and Commercial Avenue, will open after […]

North to south

Today we enjoy a north-south perspective on downtown Anacortes from the cupola at the Majestic Inn & Spa. Volunteers from the Chamber of Commerce Visitor Information Center (VIC) combined a Christmas party with hotel/spa tours Monday afternoon. The volunteers hear from business people on a routine basis so they can keep up to speed for […]

December snow

If it’s December it must be time for snow. That was the case Thursday when the snow started falling in Anacortes shortly before lunch. This photograph was taken at 1 p.m. at the top of Commercial Avenue. Don’t know if it will stick, but it’s fun to watch it fall…

Commercial crab season opens

Commercial crab fishermen left Anacortes harbors early this morning on the first day of the 2003 season. Crab fishing is a generations-old way of life for a number of Anacortes families. Ken Crews and Karen Thompson of Anacortes were recently re-elected as officers of the Puget Sound Crab Association. Look at restaurants, grocery stores and […]
