Spirit of Yorktown

Currently in drydock at Dakota Creek Industries is the CruiseWest “Spirit of Yorktown.” According to the Cruise West website, the Spirit of Yorktown is one of the company’s newest overnight vessels, with a year-round cruising schedule that takes it as far north as Alaska and south, into Mexico’s marine-life-filled Sea of Cort

Work whatever the weather

It’s clear in this photo, but it was a cold afternoon! Often when I am hurrying between car and the comfort of an office I am reminded of those who work outside, regardless of weather. I respect those, like employees at Dakota Creek Industries, whose daily work includes weather challenges. I am grateful for those […]

Work in the weather

Work continues regardless of weather at Dakota Creek Industries in Anacortes. Pictured here are the tug “Chief” and a partial view of the “Ross Candies,” still on its way to completion and a maiden voyage.

New and old

In addition to maintenance work on the tugboat Pacific Star, crews at Dakota Creek Industries continue finish work on the Ross Candies (center), launched August 8. In the foreground is the bow section of another vessel being built for the Otto Candies Company, a marine transportation and towing company. The public is invited to check […]

Capping a Candies

Friday was the big day for a dramatic lift of a pilothouse onto the substructure of another Otto Candies vessel being built at Dakota Creek Industries (DCI). Note the gap between top level and supporting structure. Inch by inch, that gap slowly disappeared. Now welders can get to work.

Heavy lifting

Fall weather keeps most boaters at home, so “traffic” on the Guemes Channel is at a minimum as dredging continues at Dakota Creek Industries (DCI) shipyard. By the time the 2009 boating season arrives, there will be dramatic changes visible near Port of Anacortes Pier One.

Cover up

From this time forward into winter, weather can be a serious challenge for dozens of people working on the Anacortes waterfront. This temporary cover was moved into place to shield a Dakota Creek Industries crew working on Port of Anacortes Pier 2.

Hiyu in Anacortes

Tucked in behind the Crowley vessel under construction at Dakota Creek Industries is the state ferry Hiyu. This vessel, with a maximum of 200 passengers and 34 vehicles, is part of the state ferry system’s Seattle fleet. Hiyu means “plenty” in the Native American/Chinook language. Right now the WSF wishes it had plenty of money […]

Grant Candies

I was excited by this afternoon’s sunshine, so headed out with my camera for the Dakota Creek Industries (DCI) shipyard, where progress on the vessel “Grant Candies” continues. I can spot this boat from my living room window, but hadn’t been close for a couple of weeks. Ship construction is a fascinating art.

Others in the volunteer work party included Dakota’s son, Jesse; Don Spurling and City Councilman Brian Geer. Sidewalk supervisors included Stephanie Hamilton and Mary Talosi of the […]
