The garden at a downtown Anacortes drew this pair of deer Wednesday. They spent several hours snacking, and obviously they were not intimidated by the guy with the camera. I recall many stories of islanders whose love for wildlife fades quickly after an incidence of garden devastation. Ah, the trials of the ongoing clash of […]
OK, so maybe “herd” is a bit of an exaggeration, but there was a fourth deer outside this frame. I caught this group nibbling grass near 5th Street.
This deer in a field at the base of Cap Sante is obviously accustomed to “neighbors.” The two of us were enjoying a welcome splash of summer sun on Tuesday morning.
I captured this image recently on a drive past Port of Anacortes property near the airport, just off Anacopper Road. My subject wasn’t too concerned, but let’s put it this way: I wasn’t able to close the gap between us, either. I was even less successful a few minutes earlier when a river otter evaded […]
I was on my way from photographing members of the Shell Puget Sound Plant First Responders team when I noticed this beautiful March’s Point resident on the refinery grounds. It’s not uncommon to see deer in pairs, but there may well have been one in hiding. The deer was understandably skittish, even though we were […]
We shared some quality time Saturday evening with this fuzzy-horned buck, apparently drawn to our garden by the watermelon and apples in the compost pile. After a few minutes of putting up with my camera he sauntered up the street, much to the delight of the neighbors who had called us about him in the […]
A deer pops its head up from behind shrubbery in the front yard of a home near Washington Park.
Encouraged by the chain link fence that separated us, this deer moved nonchalantly toward the treeline as I approached with my camera. The photo was taken Saturday morning at March’s Point.
This young deer was unimpressed by my presence, so I had a chance to take two or three closeups before letting him get back to his breakfast. He was fine dining just outside the entrance to Washington Park on this beautiful Saturday morning.
Despite March Point’s status as an industrial center, wildlife including deer and bald eagles call the area home. The pioneer Munks family also raises cattle on homestead property located between two refineries. This photograph was taken during a visit to the Tesoro refinery, built by Shell in 1955 and sold to Tesoro in 1998. The […]
