Ducks love water, so naturally they love Fidalgo Island. I found dozens this afternoon on pond and bays of Fidalgo Island.
The harlequin on the left was already established on his shoreline perch when a buddy decided to paddle out to join him. A lot of wave action, but not enough to push them from their spot. Rosario Beach.
I always enjoy a visit to Deception Pass State Park, but my Monday morning journey was extraordinary in terms of birds. There were Canada geese and mallards at Cranberry Lake; bald eagles perched in a treetop between lake and surf. There were sparrows, crows and of course, seagulls and cormorants. There was a hawk flying […]
I didn’t even have to leave city limits Thursday to enjoy time with a mix of ducks on a reed-rimmed pond. Beautiful birds.
Ducks and dunlins on the shore at Fir Island Farm Reserve.
Nothing “black” about this Friday! I was pleased today to encounter Northern Shoveler ducks on Cranberry Lake in Deception Pass State Park. Beautiful birds.

On our south Fidalgo Island hike Saturday, however, I was struck by an “upside” of our team event from a photographer’s perspective: THREE sets of eyes rather than one! With the added observation skills of my young mates, I saw a number of things that I […]
A few photos of feathered friends, collected in the past couple of sunny days right here on fantastic Fidalgo Island! Get outside if you are able, keep your distance from fellow adventurers.
Paddling along on the sun-splashed surface of a downtown pond Wednesday morning were these three hungry ducks. I am reminded that I was once chastised by a schoolteacher for telling her class that I love to “shoot” photos. Point taken. Hey, when I “hunt,” it’s in search of another image to share with others.
All across the nation, Audubon Society volunteers strapped on binoculars, spotting scopes and cameras to participate in the annual Christmas Bird Count. Among regional teams working today (Saturday, Dec. 28) was a local trio including (l. to r.) Kirk Patterson, Wendy Patterson and Neil O’Hara. By midday this trio had counted 32 species, including an […]
Ducks paddle in formation on a sunny afternoon at Heart Lake.
I was far enough away so these ducks simply paddled off, rather than flying to safety. I love winter light, especially on the waters of our bays and lakes. Looks like that light might be lacking in days to come.
