Winter brings ducks

Ducks love water, so naturally they love Fidalgo Island. I found dozens this afternoon on pond and bays of Fidalgo Island.

Harlequins hang out

The harlequin on the left was already established on his shoreline perch when a buddy decided to paddle out to join him. A lot of wave action, but not enough to push them from their spot. Rosario Beach.

A morning for the birds

I always enjoy a visit to Deception Pass State Park, but my Monday morning journey was extraordinary in terms of birds. There were Canada geese and mallards at Cranberry Lake; bald eagles perched in a treetop between lake and surf. There were sparrows, crows and of course, seagulls and cormorants. There was a hawk flying […]

‘Shooting’ ducks on a pond

Paddling along on the sun-splashed surface of a downtown pond Wednesday morning were these three hungry ducks. I am reminded that I was once chastised by a schoolteacher for telling her class that I love to “shoot” photos. Point taken. Hey, when I “hunt,” it’s in search of another image to share with others.

Local volunteers in national bird count

All across the nation, Audubon Society volunteers strapped on binoculars, spotting scopes and cameras to participate in the annual Christmas Bird Count. Among regional teams working today (Saturday, Dec. 28) was a local trio including (l. to r.) Kirk Patterson, Wendy Patterson and Neil O’Hara. By midday this trio had counted 32 species, including an […]

Paddling away

I was far enough away so these ducks simply paddled off, rather than flying to safety. I love winter light, especially on the waters of our bays and lakes. Looks like that light might be lacking in days to come.
