What a day! After a three-year hiatus due to COVID restrictions, the U.S. Navy base in Oak Harbor opened its gates today for a well-attended Community Open House featuring SAR helicopters, electronic warfare aircraft, static displays, NW Navy Band, food, games and informational booths. Perfect light and “proximity” as a U.S. Navy “Growler” (Boeing EA-18G) flies over Dugualla toward the Oak Harbor Navy base.
One of the most exciting elements of Saturday’s Naval Aviation Centennial event at NAS Whidbey was a demonstration by a Boeing EA-18G “Growler” jet and the Douglas A-1 “Skyraider” prop plane flown primarily in Korea and Vietnam. The Centennial event drew many Anacortes residents, including active Navy personnel.
