The ferry prepares to dock at Guemes Island on a cool, rainy Saturday morning as the clock ticks toward Christmas. Recent winds dropped many trees on the island, two of which were on the property of a friend. A crew of buddies descended on the island for a couple of hours, sawing rounds that will […]
I return to this small wharf on the Guemes Channel from time to time, and regardless of the weather I find it an interesting image.
This aerial photo shows much of the city of Anacortes, the Guemes Channel and Guemes Island (top). In the lower left hand corner is Highway 20. Below on the shoreline is a portion of the Tommy Thompson Trail.
It’s really much more rewarding to see this photograph enlarged, but it is interesting at this size as well. Visible here on the Guemes Channel are shoreline facilities including Trident Seafoods, Anchor Cove Marina and the Guemes Ferry dock. Visible at the top are Anacortes High School, Memorial Football Field and the track/field below the […]
Activity was minimal at the Guemes ferry terminal Saturday morning. Only a few cars were in line on the Anacortes side of the Skagit County ferry run. Traffic builds, however, as spring and summer draw seasonal visitors.

Despite power outages from weekend winds, travel to and from Guemes Island continued for islanders with places to go, people to see. The Guemes ferry, pictured here just after leaving Anacortes, is operated by Skagit County.
An oil tanker exits Anacortes under tug escort on a Saturday morning. Visible in the foreground is Lovric’s boat yard.
There’s nothing like Saturday sunshine to draw boaters to the water. The boat in the foreground is the “Goose,” homeport Anacortes. This photograph was taken from Curtis Wharf, owned and operated by the Port of Anacortes.
This photograph was taken Thursday morning from the beach at the city’s “N” Avenue Park. Visible beyond the cormorant-spotted wharf is Guemes Island and the Anderson General Store (in front of red tower).
This small ferry operating between Fidalgo and Guemes islands generates controversy from time to time as Skagit County officials and island residents struggle to come to agreement on how to operate the system in a financially responsible manner.
They come in all shapes and sizes. A sailboat glides down the Guemes Channel on a sunny weekday. Lovric’s shipyard, on the Fidalgo side of the channel below 12th Street, is in the foreground.
