Snow blankets forest, shore and beach near the state ferry terminal in Anacortes. This iced feature is one of many horseshoe-framed photographs posted along the shoreline trail.
February weather has finally yielded to cold temperatures, with ice and snow expected this week. This image features icy wetlands on the west side of the city.
We usually compost in a bin, but I also recognize that composting takes place in natural settings, such as the backyard garden. Rain and ice will work on these leaves and bark pieces in time for new growth in the spring.
I tried trading my vote for an ice cream bar, but the guy wanted cash. Tucked among the political signs on Commercial Avenue Friday was the Schwan’s man. With his truckload of delicious wares, I’m surprised he wasn’t accompanied by a security guard.
It’s hard to resist the beauty of garden corners such as this one, where cold and ice do their invisible work in preparation for spring growth.
Fidalgo Bay and Mt. Baker serve as a backdrop to this icy stretch of shoreline on the east side of March’s Point. It’s a great time of year to grab binoculars and/or a camera to observe shorebirds.

Olympic competitors aren’t the only ones on ice these days. These Anacortes ducks had only a small patch of open water Saturday morning as prolonged cold has iced over their pond. The birds let me get closer than usual before “skating” away. Apparently flight is a complicated affair, because none of the ducks took that […]
It wasn’t much compared to November’s snow, but I awakened Wednesday to find a light layer of the white stuff in the neighborhood. Snow and ice beautifully decorated the leaves of this garden plant.
Kids of all ages, shapes and sizes descended on “O” Avenue today as snow and ice created a winter playland. It was mostly kids, and mostly traditional snow toys like saucers and sleds … but there were exceptions. A couple of parents showed up with plans other standing watch. Then there was the mountain biker, […]
