Bridge casts a shadow

“Projected” onto the surface of the Swinomish Channel Sunday afternoon is a shadow of the Rainbow Bridge. To the right, downtown LaConner on the Skagit mainland. To the left, Fidalgo Island and the home of most Swinomish Tribal Community administrative offices.

Comic cry

Andrew Hansen, Town Crier for the community of Rainbow, California, takes his turn during the humorous cry competition Saturday afternoon at The Heart of Anacortes. Tomorrow’s third and final competition takes place at 2 p.m. at Seafarers’ Memorial Park adjacent to Cap Sante Boat Haven. (Hansen once served as LaConner’s Town Crier)

Fighting MS

It was all about traffic control early Saturday morning in LaConner at the start of the 2007 MS150 bicycle ride. The two-day ride is held annually to raise funds to fight multiple sclerosis. Among local teams were employees of the Shell refinery and RIS Insurance. Today riders are back at work “resting” from their weekend […]

Mission to America

I was on a photo assignment in LaConner a few days back when I heard someone behind me ask, “Is your name Berentson?” Within a few minutes I had reunited with Chip Hall, a WSU buddy from almost 30 years back. I also met Pastor Robert Amoo, who is on a mission to the U.S. […]

Rainbow Bridge

Blue skies and billowy white clouds drew me to LaConner yesterday afternoon, and I was rewarded with this photo of the Rainbow Bridge. This bridge is one of three spans linking Fidalgo Island with the Skagit Valley and Whidbey Island. There’s Berentson Bridge (twin bridges) over the Swinomish Channel, the Rainbow Bridge linking Fidalgo and […]

Visiting the neighbors

As anyone at the Chamber of Commerce would tell you, Anacortes makes a great “base camp” from which to launch Northwest adventures. We’re just a brief drive away from Seattle and Vancouver … and many wonderful communities along the way. One such community is neighboring LaConner, which straddles Fidalgo Island and the mainland. A “star” […]

Marine highway

I couldn’t help but be envious of those aboard this boat, speeding under Deception Pass Bridge on a recent afternoon. Spring’s just around the corner, I told myself. Trout fishing season is already opening in Eastern Washington. Before long I’ll be sitting in a friend’s boat with a line in the water … not a […]

LaConner waterfront

Like Anacortes, LaConner is still home to a number of working boats. In this photograph, “Irene” is tethered in the foreground with the “Rainbow Bridge” behind. This bridge links Fidalgo Island and the Swinomish Reservation with the historic waterfront community. It is the narrow Swinomish Channel that separates Fidalgo Island from the mainland.
