A different kind of fall color

First came a period of no rain, taking a toll on local trees. Then came some cool fall temps and wind. Not leaves, but needles from conifers. The Loop Road in Washington Park, west Anacortes.

Autumn Northwest

Fog on the water, dropping leaves give evidence of its arrival. You can smell it, feel it in the air. Crisp scenes become muted. It’s another Northwest autumn on Fidalgo Island, another glorious season of natural beauty.

This photograph serves as evidence of the seasonal change under way. This carpet of leaves covers the path heading west at Ship Harbor Interpretive Preserve on the west side of Anacortes.

Signs of the seasons

Don’t look now, but Fidalgo Island’s color palette is changing. Fall is a beautiful season, but I still have hopes for a warm and sunny September.

Colors before the fall

When I say “before the fall” I am referring not to the season but to the fact that leaves will soon be dropping from branches and limbs on trees like this one. This is one of many colorful trees planted along M Avenue, one of my favorite thoroughfares.

Fall scene

A derelict boat now serving a landscaping function gathers leaves as changing weather begins to strip Madrone tree branches. The old boat is located on the lawn of the Captain Whidbey Inn near Coupeville.

Signs of the season

This photograph of a tree in downtown Anacortes tells it all. Between raindrops and the changing color of the leaves, we know for certain we are in transition from summer to fall. Soon it will be time for a drive to the North Cascades, beautiful year-round, but especially in the fall. I found information regarding […]
