First came a period of no rain, taking a toll on local trees. Then came some cool fall temps and wind. Not leaves, but needles from conifers. The Loop Road in Washington Park, west Anacortes.
Fog on the water, dropping leaves give evidence of its arrival. You can smell it, feel it in the air. Crisp scenes become muted. It’s another Northwest autumn on Fidalgo Island, another glorious season of natural beauty.
This photograph serves as evidence of the seasonal change under way. This carpet of leaves covers the path heading west at Ship Harbor Interpretive Preserve on the west side of Anacortes.
Don’t look now, but Fidalgo Island’s color palette is changing. Fall is a beautiful season, but I still have hopes for a warm and sunny September.
These tracks lead directly from fall into winter. I shot this photograph on 9th Street, just down the block from the Calico Cupboard Restaurant. The tracks bring back memories of Tommy Thompson’s custom-built narrow gauge train.
Tuesday afternoon was a perfect time for a walk. This fall scene was captured on “Q” Avenue, looking south.
It’s hard to resist the beauty of garden corners such as this one, where cold and ice do their invisible work in preparation for spring growth.
It’s almost time to drive east to photograph fall colors. In the meantime, some deciduous trees such as this one at Storvik Park have started to “splash” color on the local horizon.
For a slice of the “Cascades Highway” experience in terms of fall colors, see the trees in the neighborhood of the North Basin of Cap Sante Boat Haven, just one block south of 4th Street.
When I say “before the fall” I am referring not to the season but to the fact that leaves will soon be dropping from branches and limbs on trees like this one. This is one of many colorful trees planted along M Avenue, one of my favorite thoroughfares.
A derelict boat now serving a landscaping function gathers leaves as changing weather begins to strip Madrone tree branches. The old boat is located on the lawn of the Captain Whidbey Inn near Coupeville.
