Mayor draws crowd

Anacortes Mayor Dean Maxwell’s reputation for drawing a crowd at Chamber of Commerce events remained intact Thursday. Maxwell, whose presentation included accolades to local business people for their community contributions, touched on a wide range of subjects during his presentation. He told his audience “I’m very passionate about government and the services we provide, and […]

State AG visits

Just back from a visit to Washington, D.C., state Attorney General Rob McKenna visited Anacortes Friday. McKenna met with about 10 business people at the Chamber of Commerce, and then headed for lunch with Mayor Dean Maxwell. Washington state attorneys Wednesday argued a case in front of the U.S. Supreme Court regarding union dues and […]

Time skates by

I was sorting through old images today when I ran across this photo from the fall of 2001. The city’s skateboard park on “R” Avenue was under construction, and Mayor Dean Maxwell (center) stopped by to check out the progress. The park’s been a great addition to the city park system, offering a welcome recreational […]

Insurmountable lead?

Just moments after receiving the first election returns from the county courthouse Tuesday night, Anacortes Mayor Dean Maxwell (left) is corralled for an interview by KLKI radio station owner Bill Berry. With a 67 percent lead, it’s likely Maxwell will be serving a fourth four-year term. An election night gala was hosted by Gere-a-Deli restaurant. […]

Trestle walk sparks memories

It was a campaign photo op for Anacortes Mayor Dean Maxwell (right) and County Commissioner Don Munks (center), but the walk along the former Burlington Northern railroad trestle on Fidalgo Bay also sparked childhood memories for both local leaders. Munks, descendent of a Skagit pioneer, recalled swimming out to wrecked boats just offshore. When the […]

Diplomacy in action

Anacortes Mayor Dean Maxwell (left) contributed generously today to city/Port of Anacortes relations when he opted to bite his tongue regarding Port Commissioner Pat Mooney’s necktie. With the clock ticking toward Valentine’s Day, Pat decided to celebrate with a bold fashion statement: his tie featured pink and red hearts. Unlike the mayor, I couldn’t pass […]

Mayor takes spin in hybrid

Mayor Dean Maxwell (right) took a spin in the city’s new hybrid car Tuesday afternoon with Shell Puget Sound Refinery Manager Tom Smith riding shotgun. Shell donated $8,000 toward purchase of the 2004 Toyota Prius. Maxwell drove the car, then Smith took his turn behind the wheel. Both delivered a “thumbs up” verdict.

Mayor Dean joins parade

Mayor Dean Maxwell (in back seat) participated in Saturday’s Christmas Parade, sponsored by the Lions Club. It was a beautiful “one-horse open carriage” for the city’s top executive, who just one week ago presided over the kickoff of the Salvation Army Christmas Kettle campaign. The lights are now glowing each night at Causland Park, too, […]
