It’s a “ghost of murals past” scene as Bob Thomas at Anacortes Marine Supply and Hardware cleans up the surface of a wall previously occupied by a Bill Mitchell mural. Removed temporarily for cleanup and paint on the building was the “Edna Whitney and Tandem Pals” mural, created about 10 years ago.
I don’t know the particulars about this Bill Mitchell mural, but I know it is appropriate for this time of year. This snow-shoveling character adorns the north wall of the Gere-a-Deli Restaurant on Commercial Avenue. The building once served the community as a bank.
A popular Bill Mitchell mural of narrow gauge railroad builder Tommy Thompson is framed by the orange leaves of a tree on the corner of 9th and Commercial Avenue. Thompson posed for a photo with his wife, Anne, and Mitchell later converted the photo into an outdoor mural.
One element of a community celebration at Whitney Elementary School Friday afternoon was the unveiling of this new mural featuring the school’s mascot. Dozens of students “made their mark” on the mural, decorating the painting with handprints. The celebration was held as Whitney closes its history as an elementary school. Next year it will be […]
Artist Bill Mitchell (foreground) supervises as volunteers Neil Akkerman and Dave Sem (Sebo’s Hardware & Equipment Rental) raise the leaping salmon element of a new historic mural into place on a south wall of the Anacortes Chamber of Commerce Building. The new mural went up in three pieces Tuesday evening, and now stands as a […]
Bill Mitchell (left) applied his talents to creation of a new mural in commemoration of the unofficial “Year of the Salmon,” partnering with the Chamber of Commerce to bring a new outdoor artwork for the side of the Visitor Information Center. Visiting Bill in his studio last week was Chamber Executive Director Mitch Everton. “Others” […]
Open for only a few days each spring is the window of opportunity for this scene, featuring pink blossoms and the artwork of local muralist Bill Mitchell. The mural decorates the wall of The Deport Arts Center on “R” Avenue. Soon crowds will gather for a variety of spring events including the May 20 opening […]
This mural at the Marina Inn on Commercial Avenue is the latest work by local artist Bill Mitchell. The 12-foot piece was inspired by a photo of the vessel “City of Anacortes,” boasting a group of enthusiastic passengers lining the deck. It’s worth a stop for an up-close-and-personal viewing of Bill’s meticulous work.
Daughter Kirsten and I had a little fun on a weekend walk, taking just a minute to pose for a photo “in conversation” with a character from one of Bill Mitchell’s historic murals. This mural is painted on the Commercial Avenue side of one of the buildings at the Port of Anacortes. The truck in […]
Not this weekend, but the next. Mark your calendars now for August 6-8, when tens of thousands will gather for the largest event of the year in this seaside community. These festival characters, up against the wall at Arts Festival headquarters on “O” Avenue, were created by muralist Bill Mitchell.
Among the more interesting floats in last weekend’s 4th of July parade was this one by artist Bill Mitchell. His truck was decked out with a number of colorful wall murals, including a “hood ornament” of Melville Curtis. Bill rolled along in the parade too in his familiar three-wheeled vehicle. His murals, popluar with city […]
This colorful outdoor mural, which boasts a sort of “Roaring Twenties” look, features principals from the Anacortes Stage and Taxi Company. Creator of the 5th Street mural, and dozens of others in town, is artist/historian Bill Mitchell. The printing on the back of the vehicle reads: “Licensed carrier and bootleg cab.”
