Top two fish

Wide grins followed presentation of checks to top fishermen at Sunday afternoon’s culminating ceremony of the Anacortes Salmon Derby. Pictured here with the top two fish are $15,000 winner Mike Campion (left) of Bellingham and $5,000 second place winner Pat Barton of Anacortes. Campion’s fish weighed 18.96 pounds, followed closely by Barton’s at 18.74.

Potential prize

Because the Anacortes Salmon Derby is part of the Northwest Salmon Derby series, participants qualify for an end-of-season drawing for this boat. The boat is displayed near the Cap Sante Boat Haven Harbormaster’s office, just a stone’s throw from the Big Tent where this weekend’s derby activities will be coordinated. Official derby days are Saturday […]

It’s derby time

This photo tells the story of what I’m doing this weekend. Captain Jim, my brother-in-law, brought his boat and considerable fishing skills so we could participate again in the great Anacortes Salmon Derby. I caught this 8.24 pounder just west of Orcas Island. Plan calls for “more, bigger” Sunday. Thanks, Puget Sound Anglers and Port […]

Marina snow

Snow drifted on this garbage can at Cap Sante Boat Haven serves as illustration for the decision to cancel the Christmas Boat Parade originally scheduled to take place Friday night, December 19. Activity at the downtown marina was limited, but many downtown sidewalks are clear and the main streets have been sanded. Consider participation in […]

Derby time

Jay Field (right) and fellow members of the local chapter of Puget Sound Anglers have been quite busy for the past few weeks. Tomorrow marks the first day of the two-day Anacortes Salmon Derby, an event launched last year to raise money for scholarships. This derby has been a smash success, with all 800 participant […]

Derby prep

Brother Rich has been doing warmups for this weekend’s Anacortes Salmon Derby, a scholarship event that features a $10,000 prize for the biggest fish. Rich said there were two fish in his boat, but he was a bit sketchy on details. Eight hundred tickets have been sold for the Derby, which will base out of […]

Salmon on the can

Artist Bill Mitchell (foreground) supervises as volunteers Neil Akkerman and Dave Sem (Sebo’s Hardware & Equipment Rental) raise the leaping salmon element of a new historic mural into place on a south wall of the Anacortes Chamber of Commerce Building. The new mural went up in three pieces Tuesday evening, and now stands as a […]

Bill’s latest

Bill Mitchell (left) applied his talents to creation of a new mural in commemoration of the unofficial “Year of the Salmon,” partnering with the Chamber of Commerce to bring a new outdoor artwork for the side of the Visitor Information Center. Visiting Bill in his studio last week was Chamber Executive Director Mitch Everton. “Others” […]

Derby winner

Winner of the $5,000 prize for biggest fish in the Anacortes Salmon Derby was Ronald Henning, pictured here with plaque and 22-pound, 8-ounce beauty. Presentations were made by Jay Field (right), president of the Fidalgo Island Chapter of the Puget Sound Anglers organization. This two-day event was a great success, drawing 750 ticket holders. More […]

Salmon label

Many years I ago I invested in a collection of salmon can labels. Anacortes was once the salmon canning capital of the world, so it seemed appropriate to acknowledge that distinction with the purchase of a set of labels, many quite beautiful. Among the labels is this one from the Fidalgo Island Packing Company. Next […]

Save the Waves

Adults and Girl Scouts associated with troops 929 and 2399 spent a few hours Saturday morning painting “no waste” messages on city storm drains that empty into the sea. Pictured here are Scouts Gabriella Primozich and Katie Hudak with adult volunteers Janice Hudak and Dee Ann Webb. Members of Coho and Chinook volunteer teams worked […]
