I got a big kick out of this clever effort on someone’s part to put a Christmas spin on the Wallie Funk photo display at the Anacortes Museum. Someone tacked a Santa hat onto the photo cutout of a young Wallie Funk performing publisher/editor duties at the Anacortes American in the 1950s. Funk, now retired, […]
Santa rode in a Lark in last weekend’s downtown Christmas Parade, special guest of classic car owner Loren Knutsen. Other parade dignitaries included Mayor Dean Maxwell and County Commissioner Don Munks.
It was a wonderful morning for a parade, as evidenced in this photo. Hundreds lined the avenue in downtown Anacortes as Christmas parade entries moved up the street toward Causland Park. Entries included Scouts, a church, horses, a couple of elected officials, Santa, classic cars, firetrucks and other emergency response vehicles, service organizations and more. […]
After a week that found many hunkered down due to snow and ice, hundreds of Anacortesans gathered downtown Friday for the annual Christmas tree lighting sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. Following the tree lighting festivities, folks spilled onto Commercial Avenue. Many businesses including shops, galleries and restaurants were open for the annual Holiday Art […]
Three-year-old Elevyn scratches his head as he ponders his Christmas wish list in a meeting with Santa. The impromptu session took place at the base of the winding staircase of the Majestic Inn & Spa during an Open House at which Santa was a guest.
As Mom watches on, 10-month-old Anouk Robb experiences her first delightful meeting with Santa. The occasion was a Thursday evening Grand Opening gala at the Majestic Inn and Spa in downtown Anacortes. Anouk is the daughter of Duncan and Sandi Robb of Bellingham. Santa will also be a featured guest tonight (Friday, Dec. 2) at […]
Town namesake Anna Curtis gazes toward Commercial Avenue as Santa Claus waves to the crowd during the 2005 Lions Club Christmas Parade on Commercial Avenue. See more photos in the Activities section under “Just looking” and “Christmas Parade I.”
The morning sun poked through as hundreds gathered along Commercial Avenue for the annual Lions Club Christmas Parade Saturday in Anacortes. Lions “shared the stage” with many other organizations including the Kiwanis Club, represented here by Santa and a trailer-load of young helpers. As usual, the parade included local stars ranging from Mayor Dean Maxwell […]
Glimpses of Christmas past are visible in the windows of antique stores on Commercial Avenue. This Santa Claus salt and pepper set scene also features a cookbook illustrated by Norman Rockwell. Days Gone By and Anacortes Antiques are side-by-side shops within walking distance from Port of Anacortes facilities and the Guemes Channel.
This is, after all, a community with a rich maritime heritage. One of my favorite Christmas window decorations is the wave-hopping Santa at Anacortes Marine Supply and Hardware on Commercial Avenue. Other holiday delights at this historic shop include a tree decorated with fishing lures.
In keeping with a decades-old tradition, Santa arrived Saturday at the Tesoro employees recreation hall. Dozens of children lined up for the chance to deliver their Christmas wish lists personally. The Tesoro children’s party dates back to the Fifties, when the refinery was built by Shell.
Santa Claus stopped in at Causland Park Saturday night, much to the delight of this young girl who responded with a hug. Santa distributed Christmas greetings and gifts to children attending the Carol Sing-along sponsored by the Salvation Army – Anacortes Corps. Music was provided by a Salvation Army band, with the voices of The […]
