With the roar of two U.S. Navy jets kicking off the event, the 2022 Anacortes 4th of July Parade roared back to life. It was exciting to see hundreds of people crowd the sidewalks of Commercial Avenue to enjoy this colorful parade. Following are a few shots for the archives:
In the first week of February 2006 a local contingent traveled to Washington, D.C. seeking support for Port of Anacortes Project Pier 1. Among those on the trip were Bob Elsner, Steve Hopley and Margaret Schwertner of the Port. Mayor Dean Maxell was on the team. Mike Nelson of Dakota Creek Industries also made the […]
Familiar guests at Cap Sante Boat Haven in Anacortes are the Lady Washington and the Hawaiian Chieftain, tall ship replicas that delight people around the Puget Sound. For details about the ships and their schedules, visit www.ladywashington.org.
Sunshine drew me to the west side of the city. I was greeted near the entrance to Washington Park by this pair of deer, which moved cautiously from the treeline to the perimeter road leading to the Loop Road. I stopped along the way to descend the stairs to a wave-washed beach. A refreshing mid-afternoon […]
Among modest developments in Anacortes recently is this new sign/electronic reader board at Washington Federal Bank on Commercial Avenue. Here’s hoping the temperatures remain on the high end of the sixties for a few more weeks …
The appeal differs, but both tall ship Lady Washington and power boat Mystic Sea (right) generate revenue by inviting tourists for Puget Sound adventures. The Mystic Sea is a whale watching vessel based in Anacortes. The Lady Washington, whose homeport is Grays Harbor, moves about during spring and summer. For the past five days she […]
Docked in Anacortes for the past few days have been tall ship replicas Hawaiian Chieftain (foreground) and Lady Washington, the Official Ship of the State of Washington. In addition to area cruises, the ships have offered short jaunts so civilian “crews” can participate in “battles.” The ships are docked at Cap Sante Boat Haven. For […]
Lady of the Sea, a sculpture at Seafarers’ Memorial in downtown Anacortes, “greets” each vessel entering the harbor at Cap Sante Boat Haven. This week she welcomes another “lady” — the Lady of Washington clipper ship.
Sharing the frame in this Monday morning shot are the Lady Washington and the Mitlite (foreground). There will be dozens of more “modern” boats at Cap Sante Boat Haven this week for the 2010 TrawlerFest.
This gentleman was among a dozen or so walkers I encountered Wednesday afternoon on a drive through Washington Park.
Washington Park and environs are a great place to photograph wildlife such as this pair of deer. I love such encounters, but a few minutes after taking this photo I spotted four deer in the front yard of a nearby home, and I doubt the homeowner shares my excitement about these lovely creatures.
Take advantage of the coming break in weather to get out and enjoy one of this community’s most precious assets … Washington Park. Take 12th Street/Oakes west past the ferry terminal and hook up with the loop road that leads to this vantage point above Burrows Bay. Pedestrians only before 10 a.m.
