I photographed this bald eagle in 2001 at the close of a successful rehab. The bird had been injured by a car on Whidbey Island, was released into the wild again when injuries were healed.

Tips of large sticks of chalk, available to visitors at Whidbey Farm & Market, Monroe Landing Road, Oak Harbor.
On my many trips to and from Whidbey Island over the years, I have only seen an eagle on this Fidalgo Island snag on two or three occasions. On this day in 2013 I was fortunate to find a parking spot and get to Canoe Pass Bridge in time to take a few shots.
This was the view Friday afternoon looking from Mt. Erie toward North Whidbey Island. Lots of folks out, prompted in part (I’m guessing) by forecasts that call for gray and rain over the next couple of days.
Anacortes business people had the opportunity Tuesday to tour nearby NAS Whidbey. Lunch took place at the Officer’s Club, which includes behind the bar display “graphics” such as this model of an EA6B electronic warfare aircraft. Chamber members learned that NAS Whidbey boasts a population of 7,600 military personnel; 1,200 Department of Defense employees; 1,200 […]
Commanding Officer Capt. Gerral David’s Tuesday afternoon “briefing” for an Anacortes Chamber of Commerce group included air base history. Pictured on the screen behind David is a photo of Willis B. Haviland, a WWI veteran who ultimately served as commanding officer of the base. David noted that NAS Whidbey was established in 1942 with an […]
This sign went up this recently at the edge of Pass Lake on Highway 20, on the Fidalgo Island side of Deception Pass State Park. Fellow photographer/blogger Ryan Mahoney reports that there is also a sign on the road to the Port Townsend ferry in Coupeville. A great tourism marketing idea. I’m thinking it would […]
I photographed this rural scene on a recent trip to the Keystone Ferry on Central Whidbey Island. This is part of Ebey’s Prairie National Historic Preserve near Coupeville, county seat of Island County. From the very earliest use by the Skagit Indians and subsequent settlement by white pioneers, the prairie land has been used for agriculture. […]
A derelict boat now serving a landscaping function gathers leaves as changing weather begins to strip Madrone tree branches. The old boat is located on the lawn of the Captain Whidbey Inn near Coupeville.
I drive by routinely, but last weekend I found an opening in the traffic and pulled in to the Dugualla Bay Farms fresh produce stand on North Whidbey. Among the photos I took was this closeup of gears on a piece of rusted, lichen-infested McCormick-Deering equipment. The farm lies directly under the path of U.S. […]
