Wind and rain wreak havoc

Still remaining on roadways and parks throughout the area is evidence of the damage caused by prolonged rain (saturated ground) and high winds in recent days. This large tree was the only deciduous tree in a stand near the path leading to Rosario Head. Wind split the tree near its base. Another walker at Rosario […]

Windy but warm

It was windy but unseasonably warm Tuesday morning, so I ventured out to Deception Pass State Park and Rosario Beach. Cranberry lake was choppy, and waves were high at West Point on the Whidbey side of the state park. At Rosario Head waves were dramatic as well, and there was light damage from the wind. […]

Wind on the water

Waves crash on the shoreline of the Rosario Beach area, south Fidalgo Island. It was nice to see blue skies Saturday afternoon, even if it was windy and cold.

In the news

High winds brought a KING 5 television crew to Anacortes early Monday morning. A morning broadcast by reporter Teresa Yuan cited gusts of 29 mph, recorded at the Anacortes Middle School weather center. In addition to downtown shots including the arch over Commercial Avenue, one of Yuan’s live reports featured Ed Brown, who was headed […]

A series of sunny days has also included some relatively dramatic winds, as evidenced in this photograph at the entrance to Island Hospital in Anacortes.

Whitecaps

I was the only person at Sunset Beach Monday morning. No surprise. Could barely maintain my balance to snap a few photos of the whitecaps. Got to the Loop Road gate too early, settled for the beach shots and some beauties of local deer. Encountered a very relaxed group of six near the Loop Road […]

Ocean spray

When I got to Seafarers’ Memorial Park about noon Saturday, I took my cap off before the wind took it off for me. Only the hearty ventured out for Saturday strolls in these blustery winds. Still, it’s kind of fun to watch the action on the water.

Storm damage

Thursday night’s wind storm slammed communities throughout the Northwest, and Anacortes was no exception. School was cancelled, primarily due to situations like this on Havecost Road. Trees are down all over Fidalgo Island, especially on the west side. I got about a mile from this snapped tree and was turned back at Marine Drive. I […]

Wind damage

Wind and rain dealt damaging blows to Anacortes this weekend, including this high-profile hit on the New Wilson renovation project downtown. Emergency crews worked all day on the twisted wreck of a wall of scaffolding and protective plastic wrap on the hotel’s north side. Commercial Avenue and two side streets were closed to traffic to […]

Wind and water

What a gorgeous morning for a trip to the beach! High winds churned up the surf under sunny skies, waves crashing on the rocky shores of Fidalgo Island. This photograph was taken at the end of 5th Street off V Avenue at the foot of Cap Sante. Word is we have more clouds and rain […]

Hunkered down

Seagulls generally fly away when approached, unless there are french fries involved. I didn’t have fries with me, but this guy was hunkered down against the cold wind and didn’t intend to move on unless absolutely necessary. On top of irritating weather, the gull had a pesky feather stuck to his beak. Maybe a dip […]
