John Wayne’s first yacht, the Nor’wester, pictured here as a participant in the 2010 Anacortes Work Boat Races. Originally built in 1932, the Norwester was first christened the “Chiro” by her owner Charles Gilbert. In 1937 she was sold, and ended up serving the Navy during WWII to help patrol the coast. After the war, […]
Sailors engaged in a race are photographed through the masts of sailboats tethered at the docks of Anacortes Marina.
There has been a lull in boat manufacturing, but this beauty near the old plywood mill site on the south shore of Anacortes stands as evidence that there is light on the horizon for this industry. The vessel belongs to Northern Marine, with a launch date pending.
I shot this photo from Cap Sante in the Eighties. Reference points include Washington Federal Savings and Safeway. Some shoreline properties have been demolished, others constructed since this photo. There are no longer covered boathouses at Cap Sante Boat Haven, either.
The new yacht “Bella Bri” rolled into the sunlight this week, visible to travelers on “R” Avenue in Anacortes. Note the men working on a lift to get a sense of how large this boat is. Builder is Northern Marine.
Crowds gathered Friday evening as the “After Eight” made its way from a 22nd Avenue Northern Marine construction building to a Guemes Channel launch site. This photo was taken at 6:30, during a brief pause at about 17th Street. Reports on site were mixed, but it’s likely the 151-foot tri-deck yacht will go in the […]
This was a welcome scene Friday morning. Not only did I awkaen to discover blue skies and sunshine (Come on, spring!), but I was treated to the vision of a new yacht coming out of Northern Marine on the Anacortes waterfront. Some time in the not-so-distant future a proud new owner will be posing for […]
Work on a yacht continues under lights as sunset comes early in Anacortes during the winter season. According to the Economic Development Association of Skagit County (EDASC), there are more than 20 boat manufacturers in Skagit County.
She’ll probably look even prettier under sunny skies, but this new yacht in front of Northern Marine is “eye candy” to the boat enthusiast even under a blanket of rain clouds.
This 152-foot yacht, built by Northern Marine, Inc. of Anacortes, was moved outside over the weekend. For a sense of the vessel’s size, note worker on top. Northern Marine owner Gilbert Villarreal touts the boat as the largest Fiberglas vessel ever built on Fidalgo Island.
A partially opened door at Northern Marine, Inc. the other day yielded a glimpse of a new yacht under construction. I counted four vessels in total inside the huge building on 42nd Street near Fidalgo Bay.
Finish work continues on the “Magic,” a custom-designed yacht built by Northern Marine, Inc. of Anacortes. This beautiful multi-million dollar vessel moved “outside” this week after months of construction in the hangar to the left. The 130-foot Magic is a Ward Setzer designed tri-deck custom motor yacht. A large marbled tile foyer welcomes all at […]
