Air Centennial

It was a wonderful day on Whidbey last Saturday, July 30, when the Navy joined approximately 15,000 guests in an international celebration of U.S. Naval Aviation. One hundred years! Included here are a few of the 400-plus photos I shot during this sun-splashed Centennial. Among the aircraft is a Boeing PT-13 Stearman Kaydet. This aircraft drew the attention of retired Navy Captain Jim McKenzie, who told me he flew the plane while attending the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis. The helo rescue demonstration was a crowd-pleaser, as was the line of Growler jets sporting special paint for the occasion. Static displays featured condensed (very condensed) history of U.S. naval aviation. An awesome event!

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
