Day Trippin’

Sometimes, not often enough, my wife and I escape our daily routine on a day trip as walk-ons aboard a state ferry bound for the San Juans. Passenger only rates are still affordable, and the trip is relaxing, regardless of weather (don’t bring that cell phone!). We like to pack a lunch with treats we don’t ordinarily eat and drink. There’s also food service aboard, if you want to go that route. It’s always a good idea to bring camera, binoculars, and reading material. Sights along the way include other ferries and recreational vessels moving along at a faster clip. Although I haven’t been so lucky, I’ve heard of travelers blessed with a viewing of a playful orca pod. At Friday Harbor you can either disembark for a brief visit or stay aboard for conversation and a semi-private picnic lunch. Another good idea, especially on a beautiful summer day, is to walk a few laps around the upper deck of the ferry … a memorable experience for all the senses.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
