Back in time

Tesoro Northwest took a step back in time Saturday, June 21 when they invited members of a Civil War re-enactment group to start their 9th annual March Point Run. Taking part in the race with separate gun starts for kids’ half-mile and 5K-10K races were six members of the Bellingham-based 15th Alabama Volunteer Infantry, Company G. Captain Tobey Gulley of Ferndale brought his 4-year-old daughter, Rosalie, whose little uniform boasts the stripes of a sergeant major in the Confederate Army. Members of the unit participate in four full battle re-enactments each year. They also visit schools for “living history” lessons, teaching subjects ranging from artillery and engineering to female soldiers in the Civil War. On August 9 and 10 the group will take part in an event at Hovander Park in Whatcom County. There will be two battle re-enactments each day, with participants staying in period camps on site.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
