These black and white photographs (as opposed to color) reflect the fact that I was a photojournalist working in Oak Harbor at the time they were taken. Kodak Tri-X was the film of choice. The first image, taken by NAS Whidbey Public Affairs Officer Jim Kennedy, shows an excited young Steve Berentson readying for a flight (too brief!) with Lt. Bruce Davey of the Blue Angels flight demonstration team in 1977. The second photo is one I took of nephew Michael Corley during a visit to Whidbey for an air show several years after my memorable flight. Despite his interest in aircraft, the little guy ultimately locked onto a career path other than naval aviation. Michael is now a young man, finishing medical school in Southern California. The last shot is one of me on the deck of the USS Nimitz. I made that trip with Oak Harbor Mayor Al Koetje and a few other city officials. We were joined by a few hundred other dignitaries and media reps. An awesome boat!
A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
